Pest control is a vital element of good dune management, and to protect our native birds and plants we work under contract to DOC to eradicate rats, rabbits and other predators.  MHRS also works closely with The New Zealand Fairy Tern Charitable Trust.  The dunes are a haven for the highly endangered New Zealand Fairy Tern, as well as foreign migratory birds, NZ and Banded Dotterels, Caspian and White Fronted Terns, Variable Oyster Catchers and others.
